John Parker Wilson and Marc Guillon each turned in solid performances as the Crimson Tide wrapped up its spring football drills with the annual A-Day game, with the White team defeating the Crimson, 20-18.

Guillons 28-yard touchdown pass to Ezekiel Knight with 3:54 remaining in the fourth quarte proved to be the difference in the game. The White team had trailed throughout the contest up to that point.

Alabama relied heavily on its kickers in the game, which was fortunate for the Tide as they search for a replacement for the departed Brian Bostick. Ryan Saxby and C.J. Rhody handled the kicking duties for the White and Crimson teams respectively. Each player converted on two successful field goal attempts, as Saxby converted from 27 and 29 yards and Rhody drilled a pair of 41-yarders.

But much of the attention surrounding the game focused on Alabamas quarterback situation. As senior Brodie Croyle watched from the sidelines, the junior Guillon and the freshman Wilson stepped into the role of primary signal-callers.

Wilson finished 14 of 31 for 168 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. His performance earned him the Dixie Howell Memorial Award as the games most outstanding player. Guillon completed 13 of 26 passes for 157 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a winning effort.

University of Alabama head football Nick Saban announced today that Geoff Collins, former Director of Player Personnel at Georgia Tech, has joined the Crimson Tide football coaching staff as Director of Player Personnel.

Collins will oversee Alabamas coaching clinics, camps and other events while organizing on-campus recruiting. In 2006, Collins directed Techs on-campus recruiting while also overseeing coaching clinics, camps and other football events. He was instrumental in Techs highly-regarded 2007 football signing class that was ranked as high as 11th nationally by one service and was rated the best in the ACC, a first in Tech history. Collins comes to Tuscaloosa after his second stint at Tech, where he served from 1999-2001, including one season as tight ends coach following two seasons as a graduate assistant coach. From 2002-05, Collins served as defensive coordinator at Western Carolina where he also coached defensive backs his first three seasons and coached linebackers in 2005.

In 2005, Collins WCU defense led the nation in pass defense while ranking 18th nationally in total defense. His 2004 unit ranked 12th in the nation in total defense and his 2003 defense ranked 14th nationally against the run. From 2003-05, 11 WCU defensive players earned all-conference honors under Collins tutelage. Collins was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Albright College in 1997-98, was an assistant coach at Fordham in 1996 and spent the 1995 season as an assistant coach at Franklin (N.C.) High School. In 1993, Collins began his coaching career as a student assistant at Western Carolina.

As a player, Collins was an outside linebacker and defensive back at Western Carolina from 1989-92, making 194 tackles during his career. A native of Conyers, Ga., Collins attended Rockdale County High School. He earned a bachelors degree in Sport Management and Exercise Science from WCU in 1993 and completed the schools Education curriculum in 1995. Collins is married to the former Jennifer Haynes.

The University of Alabama football team went through a spirited practice in shorts Thursday afternoon as a final tune-up before Saturdays 2 p.m. A-Day game in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The popular Fan Day will be held in Coleman Coliseum from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, with Walk-of-Fame ceremonies slated for 1 p.m. at Denny Chimes. Gates at Bryant-Denny Stadium will open at 12:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

We had a good practice today, short and down, said Tide coach Mike Shula. We did a lot more 7-on-7.

Shula indicated that Tide quarterback Brodie Croyle, got more work. He looked sharp throwing the ball. Were just getting ourselves ready for Saturday. I think everyone out here has gotten better as a player, as a team, too. Hopefully we will see some of that Saturday with a few more people in the stands.

Thursdays practice marked the 14th of the NCAA mandated 15 spring practice sessions. Saturdays A-Day game will be the final session of spring practice.

The format will be as traditional as we can, Shula offered. Well do some 7-on-7 before the scrimmage, have some field goal kickers out there with snappers and holders kicking before the scrimmage starts, and then during halftime, well have some punt coverage. The scrimmage will be the first offense vs. the first defense and second offense vs. second defense.
