| Ferrari flew a replacement gearbox from Italy to Bahrain in vain as Brazilian Rubens Barrichello suffered yet another failure in final qualifying for Sunday's grand prix.
A spokesman for the Formula One champions said Barrichello would revert to the repaired gearbox that he used for first qualifying on Saturday. The Brazilian, who qualified 15th for what will be a debut race for the new F2005 car, will have to start from the rear of the field after the team decided to give him a new engine as a precautionary measure. Ferrari team mate and seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher will start from the front row after qualifying second. Barrichello's gearbox suffered a problem in Friday practice after he had completed just five laps and Sunday's problems cast doubt on the likelihood of him finishing the race. |

| Australian rookie Ryan Briscoe lost a golden chance for a maiden Indycar series victory when he came off second-best in a skirmish with series champion Tony Kanaan.
Briscoe, 23, was in front and seemingly on the way to a win in the Grand Prix of St Petersburg before a pair of late caution flags. Kanaan took advantage of the first restart, on the 84th of 100 laps, to move from fourth to second, bumping past Briscoe's teammate Darren Manning and then moving past his own teammate Dan Wheldon. Another collision on the 87th lap brought out the fifth and final caution flag and put Brazilian veteran Kanaan right behind Briscoe for the restart on lap 92. As the green flag waved, Kanaan began harassing the young leader, feinting first to the outside, then the inside and finally trying to move past Briscoe on the inside as they went into turn 10. The two cars came into contact and Briscoe careered into a tyre wall, crashing out for the third time in his three starts in the series. regained the lead and beat Kanaan by 1.45 seconds. |
