| HE'S TRYING TO FORGET HIS LOST SEASON:
Panthers center feared injury last season could be career-ender: 8/17/07: Carolina Panthers center Justin Hartwig started 47 of his last 48 games with the Tennessee Titans. Ask Carolina Panthers center Justin Hartwig about the lowest moment of his lost 2006 season and he doesn't hesitate. "Realistically, I would say that every moment was my lowest moment," he said. "Just the whole year, just not being a part of it, not being able to do my job." Hartwig had left his old team, Tennessee, as a free agent after 2005, coming to Carolina, to help stabilize its offensive line. A severe groin injury in his first game as a Panther pushed him to the sideline, and -- except for two painful plays -- he never came back. He is healthy now, ready to take on his old Titans teammates Sunday in Nashville. But in the middle of the 2006 season , he wasn't sure if he would ever play football again. A sixth-round draft choice out of Kansas, Hartwig battled his way into a starting job in the NFL by his second season. He always thought of himself as a tough player, starting 47 of his last 48 games with Tennessee. "I take a lot of pride in what I do, and in the past I played through a lot of injuries," he said. "And then you come to a new organization and how are they supposed to know that? |

| The Carolina Panthers have been awarded three compensatory draft choices in the 2005 NFL Draft, the NFL has announced. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The Panthers three compensatory selections will supplement their six choices in the seven rounds of the 2005 NFL Draft on April 23-24. Carolina will receive two additional picks at the end of the fifth round and one at the bottom of the sixth round based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. The Panthers traded their seventh-round choice to Pittsburgh in exchange for tackle Todd Fordham prior to the start of the 2004 regular season. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula, which was developed by the NFL Management Council, based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. In 2004, the Panthers lost linebacker Greg Favors, safety Deon Grant, cornerback Reggie Howard and guard Jeno James and signed linebacker Brandon Short. The Panthers were last awarded a compensatory selection in 2002. In 1996 the Panthers stunned the NFL by winning 12 games and capturing the NFC Western Division title. Quarterback Kerry Collins and running back Anthony Johnson anchored the offense. Carolina put together the second-best defense in the NFC, featuring three Pro Bowl linebackers: Kevin Greene, Lamar Lathon, and Sam Mills. Michael Bates was the leagues top kickoff returner, averaging 30.2 yards per return. Placekicker John Kasay led the league in scoring, converting on a league-record 37 field goals. Capers was named coach of the year. After capturing the division title, Carolina defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs before losing the NFC Championship Game to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers. |
