| In one corner of the locker room Thursday, safety Adam Archuleta pointed to how highly effective Bears defensive coordinator Bob Babich's scheme can be when executed the proper way, a task the defense has failed to do consistently this season.
"I've been around poor coaching in my career. This isn't a poor-coaching problem,' said Archuleta, still distraught over the Bears' 3-5 start. 'I'm not getting it done. We're not getting it done on the field. We're not making plays." Across the room, defensive end Alex Brown expressed his thoughts on Babich. "Right now, he's feeling heat just because [when] you inherit a defense and don't play well, it goes back to him, which it shouldn't,' Brown said. 'It should come on the players. We have to play better. We should take it upon ourselves ... because we know he's going to be looked at if we don't succeed." Outside the locker room, safety Danieal Manning reiterated some of the similar views on Babich he shared during training camp. "Everybody tries to play coach Babich as the little brother under Ron Rivera. It's the Babich era now," Manning said. "Everybody's going to keep comparing them, but there's no comparison." "Certain players, Babich just knows how to talk to them. Nothing bad about Rivera, but he was the same way with everybody, period. Babich, he lets the players have input. Babich has taken this thing to another level. Now we the players have to make that change." |

| The Bears reported to training camp Saturday without unsigned first-round draft pick Cedric Benson. But the rookie running back's absence didn't dampen coach Lovie Smith's enthusiasm.
Running back Cedric Benson joined the Bears after rushing for 5,540 yards and 64 touchdowns in four seasons at Texas. "Eventually he'll get in camp and we'll put him in and get him ready once that happens," Smith said. "But the rest of our team is here and we're excited about them." The Bears, who haven't had a first-round selection hold out of training camp since receiver David Terrell missed 11 days in 2001, chose Benson with the fourth overall pick. One factor working against Chicago is the fact that most first-round picks wait until the 11th hour to agree to deals and the Bears reported to camp about a week earlier than most teams because they play an extra preseason game Aug. 8 against the Miami Dolphins. As of Saturday, none of the NFL's 32 first-round picks had agreed to terms. Bears fourth-round pick Kyle Orton also remains unsigned. But a deal with the quarterback from Purdue could be struck as early as Saturday night. |
