| What do you get if you take the champions of all six continents, add a host of the world's finest players, and pit them head-to-head in the magnificent stadiums that will host the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany? The answer, of course, is the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005. And just to add a bit more spice to the mix, the draw has thrown up the appetising prospect of Japan's coach Zico leading his side into battle against his native Brazil.
Arthur Antunes Coimbra, better known as "Zico" on Planet Football, is for many people second only to Pele in the ranks of Brazilian greats. On 1 November last, the legendary striker was among the distinguished guests at the Frankfurt Opera House to see the draw for the FIFA Confederations Cup Germany 2005. For Zico, the hands of destiny were clearly at work that afternoon, as his Japanese side were duly drawn alongside World and South American champions Brazil. |

| In between telling all and sundry about his side's aspirations, Zico also found time to chat with some of the other leading lights of the modern game. The first to embrace the Brazilian was Germany's newly appointed coach, Jrgen Klinsmann. Then there was Oliver Bierhoff, with whom the Brazilian shares a common past. Both players thrilled Italian fans in the colours of Udinese, where between them they scored 120 goals. Zico will have a chance to renew acquaintances with them in December, when his team play Germany in a friendly.
"The Germany of Jrgen and Oliver is a new side, with a new coaching staff and a new philosophy. I don't know the German players well enough yet to be able to talk about them individually, but next month's friendly in Japan will give me a chance to have a closer look at some of them", said Zico. Germany, for their part, were drawn in Group A with Argentina, Tunisia and Australia. |
