| ROMO A RICH MAN, BUT ALSO A MARKED MAN:
The 27-year-old has said since training camp that he didn't play the game for money and that large amounts of it would not change him. Secure with a $67.5 million contract from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, and $30 million guaranteed in the first three years of the deal, Romo has to change. The only way for Romo to keep his money is to change. Ever see lottery winners go broke in four years after they hit the multimillion dollar jackpot? One big reason is they didn't change. You can't be a millionaire without a millionaire mind-set. The "investment" opportunities will come at Romo like never before. He'll soon discover a long list of "family" members. "Fans" who need bills paid will come out of the woodwork. Some slickster will try to convince him to get into the restaurant/bar industry. Romo will have to take his personal car out of his name so he doesn't get sued to oblivion by unscrupulous drivers looking to get rear-ended. The late, great rapper Biggie Smalls said it best, "Mo money, mo problems." Last week it was reported that a mother who had her kids taken from her by the courts hopped on Romo's lap and gave him a "dance" at a club in Hollywood. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave Romo a tip at his "I'm Rich" news conference by imparting this wisdom about potential gold diggers: "Sometimes they can smell fresh cash." Let's hope things improve for his private dancer, Britney Spears. Oh, I didn't yet mention the on-field expectations that come with $67.5 million. Fans will want Romo to toss three scores every game, like the Patriots' Tom Brady does, and lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl in three months. Anything less than that and fans will deem him overrated. Ask Roy Williams about getting "fresh cash." Romo truly earned his payday. From a free-agent rookie who received $10,000 to sign in 2003 to an $11.5 million signing bonus four years later is a happy ending. |

| In the midst of trying to sign the top free agents in the market, the Cowboys just so happened to re-sign the NFL's all-time leading rusher on Thursday . . . finally.
As expected, the Cowboys signed Emmitt Smith to his token one-year contract, which will allow the future Pro Football Hall of Fame running back to officially retire as a Cowboy. Smith, who announced his retirement at a press conference Feb. 3 in Jacksonville, Fla., during Super Bowl week, played the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals after constructing that league-leading rushing career with the Cowboys in 13 seasons. Smith now only needs to submit his official written notification of his retirement to the league office to be officially placed on the Cowboys' reserve/retired list. The first date Smith could have re-signed with the Cowboys was March 2, the start of the NFL's free-agent signing period. However, with the Cowboys making a big splash in the first week of free agency, signing cornerback Anthony Henry, guard Marco Rivera and defensive tackle Jason Ferguson right off the bat, and recent trade talks concerning Saints defensive end Darren Howard, completing Smith's deal seemed almost trivial. But Smith made it clear at the Super Bowl retiring as a Dallas Cowboy was highly important to him. "It's only fitting for me to leave the game of football and move on with my life, and retire as a Dallas Cowboy," Smith said last month in his press conference. "It's been a tremendous ride, and one that I'm very proud of. "The memories that I have, the relationships that I'm taking away from the game are something dear and something I will take with me for the rest of my life. I'm moving on to another chapter in my life, and that's a chapter I'm looking forward to." Dallass many standouts during this period included several future Hall of Fame members, including running back Tony Dorsett and wide receivers Tony Hill and Drew Pearson. On defense, end Ed Too Tall Jones and tackle Randy White, also a future Hall of Famer, were two of the eras most feared pass-rushers. Dallas entered a rebuilding phase in the late 1980s, and after three consecutive losing seasons, Landry retired in 1989. During his career at Dallas, Landry made 19 postseason appearances in 29 seasons. With 270 career wins he ranks behind only Don Shula (347) and George Halas (324) on the NFL career list. |
