| Detroit Tigers News: |
| DETROIT -- Ten years after Edgar Renteria ended the 1997 World Series with a walkoff hit for Jim Leyland, the two had another piece of drama waiting for the end of this year's Fall Classic.
Hours after the offseason officially began, the Detroit Tigers started it off with a blockbuster deal, acquiring Renteria from the Atlanta Braves for two top prospects -- right-hander Jair Jurrjens and center fielder Gorkys Hernandez on Monday. The move not only fills the shortstop opening created when the Tigers decided to move Carlos Guillen to first base full-time starting next year, it reunites Renteria with his manager and front-office team from the world champion Marlins in '97. "We're thrilled to death to have him," said Leyland, who has kept in touch with him over the years. "Obviously he was part of the biggest night of my life, and to be reunited with Edgar Renteria is a thrill for me." It's a reunion that has Leyland and others looking forward to the future with excitement, too. "I know Jim likes to compete and I like to compete," Renteria said. "I'm going to try to do the best I can do for the team. I feel real happy to play for the Detroit Tigers." When discussions swirled late this season around the Tigers potentially moving Guillen to first base, Guillen suggested that they'd better get a very good shortstop to fill the void. Renteria addresses that. |

| More Detroit Tigers News: |
| Though he hit .322 last year, he mustered a mere .335 on-base percentage after drawing seven walks in 79 games. When he did reach base, he was caught stealing 13 times out of 32 attempts.
"The walks didn't bother me as much as the lack of runs scored," president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "So what does that mean? Maybe you're making too many outs on the basepaths, stealing, not running as well as you should, not having the instincts at times that you would like to have. I know we're in an era of on-base percentage, and I love it too, but runs scored to me is an even bigger stat than that. We wanted to improve upon that." All the while, his untimely mental mistakes on the basepaths and in the field frustrated Tigers coaches. That continued into this spring, when Trammell assigned coach Juan Samuel to work with him on his positioning and reads in center. Trammell said he was looking for energy and an ability to take charge on fly balls. Sanchez committed two errors in six Spring Training games, including a dropped fly ball Sunday, and looked shaky on other plays. "Unfortunately, in Alex's case," Trammell said, "I think what he thought was enough, wasn't." Asked if Sanchez had any trouble accepting instructions from coaches, something Brewers coaches had said they experienced during his time there, Trammell said, "There comes a time when you shouldn't have to repeat things as often as we had to. And I'll leave it at that." Defensively, Pea rebounded from a rough 2003 season to regain his reputation as a slick fielder. His .995 fielding percentage ranked ninth among qualified Major League first basemen, while his 9.46 range factor ranked eighth. Only Chicago's Paul Konerko and Oakland's Scott Hatteberg turned more double plays among American Leaguers at the position. Pea, who became eligible for arbitration for the first time, was yet another subject for agent Scott Boras to discuss with the Tigers. While Boras is no stranger to arbitration with his clients, he and Tigers vice president/legal counsel John Westhoff had talked about a deal around the holidays and a couple more times afterwards, leaving Westhoff "reasonably optimistic" about a deal. A deal with another arbitration-eligible Boras client helped speed the talks towards a figure. Washington Nationals outfielder/first baseman Brad Wilkerson, a similar hitter to Pea who was also eligible for the first time, agreed to terms Thursday on a $3,050,000 contract. Wilkerson hit .255 with 32 homers and 67 RBIs last year. At no point, Westhoff said, was a multi-year deal discussed. |
