Dover 400 News:
Ryan Newmans theme throughout his week at Dover International Speedway was to stay positive. He refused to let the blown engine that he suffered a week before at New Hampshire, which likely cost him the win, dampen his spirits heading into the MBNA America 400.

That attitude paid off Sunday as Newman drove away from the pack, taking the win by more than eight seconds over second-place finisher Mark Martin.

It was a good team effort, Newman said. Our car was awesome. It felt good to get a chance to come here and run as good as we did. The pit stops were great, and that gave us good track position, which was important.

Newmans margin of victory might have been even greater if not for a caution that came out with 74 laps to go. It erased what was a 9 -second lead for Newman at the time. But he was able to build it up over the rest of the race, which finished caution-free.

That long green flag run I got stuck behind the 88 car and I was a little bit tight, Newman said. That allowed [Martin] to stay about eight seconds behind us. I ran really hard that last 65 laps with the exception of the last five, for sure.

Newman was thoroughly dominating in winning his third race at Dover in the last two years. He led 325 of the 400 laps on the day, first taking the lead for an extended period at lap 93. He held it until he was passed by Kurt Busch on lap 184, but Newman took it back 11 laps later and held it for nearly the entire second half of the race, relinquishing it only temporarily while the field went through a round of green-flag pit stops around lap 265.

I knew after the first 100 miles we had a car that was capable of top 5 for sure, Newman said. After that, its just a little bit of tuning it here and there. Its just a matter of getting the laps in. Something could have happened on the last lap that took us out, even though we led so many laps and had such a dominant race car. Fortunately we were able to make it to the end.

Newmans win moved him to eighth in the point standings, 108 points behind new leader Jeff Gordon, who finished third. Eight of the 10 drivers in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup finished in the top 10.

It was a pretty up and down day for us, Gordon said. We started off great, started driving at the front, and then the next couple of runs we were just way off and really struggling. I was pretty happy to stay on the lead lap and be able to make some adjustments, and the guys in the pits did a great job. It was a great fight for us.

At the same time, Gordon was a bit disappointed with how the day played out.

Team effort-wise, I couldnt have been more happy with the way things turned out for us to come home third, he said. Because of that team effort, we did come home third. But we werent as good as we really needed to be. There were times when we were, but just not consistently enough.

An incredibly fast Newman turned out to be the only thing that prevented Martin from becoming the third driver in as many years to sweep a seasons races at Dover, after Martin won the June race here.

We had a great race and such a good team effort today, Martin said. Thats what we needed to do after Loudon, when we knew what we were going to do at Loudon and we knew what we could do here. I would have liked to have given [Newman] a run for his money on the last restart. I thought we could, but boy was I wrong.

Dover International Speedway has created an exciting new monster trophy to be awarded to the winner of the MBNA America 400 race on Sunday, Sept. 26. As the second of the final ten races of the season, the winner of the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup event at the Monster Mile will play an important role in determining the 2004 champion.

Winning at the Monster Mile requires great driving skills, strength and endurance from now on, the winner of our NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race will receive a trophy that will embody these attributes and be unlike any other award in the sport, said Jerry Miraglia, executive vice president of Dover Motorsports, Inc. Dover has been dubbed the Monster Mile because of the challenges the track presents to drivers. Its only fitting that the trophy incorporate our monster likeness in its design.

A concrete sample was taken from the speedway, and used as a model for creating the one-of-a-kind trophy. Composed of sandstone, a granite-like material, the monster was formed from a clay mold. After repeated brushing, refinishing and hardening, the monster evolved into its final shape. From initial concept, through many rounds of revisions, the project took approximately 4 months to complete.

A 1:24 scale Action Performance diecast car of the winner is held high in the air by the concrete monster. The fierce trophy stands approximately 30 inches tall, and weighs 40 lbs. The base features a red mirror, which in sunlight will make the monster appear on fire. Action Performance will provide the realistic 1:24 scale diecast car used in the trophy.

In keeping with Nextels inaugural campaign as title sponsor of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and our introduction of a new trophy this season, we couldn't be happier to see Dover International Speedway start a new trophy tradition of its own, said Michael Robichaud, Nextels senior director of sports & entertainment marketing. Dover International Speedway is, indeed, The Monster Mile and its monster trophy will help reflect what a strong effort it takes to win there. Our congratulations to everyone at Dover International Speedway and we look forward to many years of exciting NEXTEL Cup Series racing there.

Dover Motorsports, Inc. takes pride in creating unique trophies for its races. Nashville Superspeedways victory lane showcases the most coveted trophy on the NASCAR Busch and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series circuit. An exclusive Gibson Les Paul Guitar, with race-specific artwork designed by NASCARs Official Artist Sam Bass, is presented as the winning trophy at each race. Memphis Motorsports Park, also owned and operated by Dover Motorsports, sculpted a special set of trophies for its 2004 champions. The trophies feature the gates of Graceland, images of Elvis and prominent guitar to commemorate Memphis celebration of 50 Years of Rock n Roll.

The monster trophy was created by MTM Recognition, in Oklahoma City, Okla., makers of high-profile awards for many major sporting events. Some of MTM Recognitions previous work includes a majority of the awards for the NCAA Bowl games, SuperBowl rings, and gold medals awarded to Olympians. A team of artists was responsible for the creation of the new monster trophy.
