| Three days after conducting their first official intra-squad scrimmage of the spring, the East Carolina Pirates returned to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Monday afternoon and turned in an enthusiastic 130-minute workout in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts.
Head coach Skip Holtz and his staff completed game-tape evaluations over the weekend and developed ECU's first public depth chart Monday afternoon prior to player meetings and the workout. "I think we accomplished what we needed to," Holtz said after reviewing the 115-play controlled scrimmage. "It wasn't a typical scrimmage in a traditional sense with the 10-play possessions and the situational looks we operated in and it was certainly not a scheme practice. "We went a little lighter today after a pretty physical effort Friday," Holtz continued. "We wanted to see guys compete within the team concept and we were pleased with what we tried to to. We also learned a lot from the film as well." Injuries and position changes play a prominent role in the make-up of East Carolina's first formal two-deep of the spring. The Pirates' offensive unit currently has at least nine players who are on the sidelines because of nagging injuries or rehabilitation work, including four linemen, a pair of receivers, one quarterback and two tight ends. Defensively, ECU is missing linebackers Chris Moore, Pierre Bell and Dashaun Stephens from its current chart. |

Defensively, ECU is missing linebackers Chris Moore, Pierre Bell and Dashaun Stephens from its current chart. Holtz' recent position changes are also visible within the listings, with senior Chris Sellers (DL to OT) and junior Josh Coffman (TE to OT) holding down spots on the offensive line while senior Richard Koonce (DE to LB), sophomore Wendell Chavis (DT to DE), senior Jamar Flournoy (LB to FS) and Pierre Parker (LB to SS) have earned current jobs on defense. "There are some great battles out there," Holtz added. "I'd say all four positions in the defensive secondary are closely contested, probably the most competitive area on our team. On offense, we have tight races at the wide receiver, fullback and quarterback positions to name a few." Monday's practice was ECU's 10th of the spring period, leaving just five more sessions remaining, including a second scrimmage scheduled for Friday night and the playing of the Purple-Gold Game April 16. |
