European Grand Prix News:

The European Grand Prix is a Formula One event that was held during the mid-1980s and has been held mostly regularly since 1993. Both incarnations of the event were developed as stopgaps. In 1983, the Formula One schedule initially planned on a race in New York. When the race was cancelled three months before the event, track organizers at the Brands Hatch were able to develop a European Grand Prix at the track in its place. The success of the event, buoyed by a spirited battle for the World Championship, led to the event returning on the schedule the following year. At the time, the Brands Hatch circuit hosted the British GP in even numbered years, alternating with Silverstone, so the European GP went to the "new" shorter Nrburgring circuit in 1984. Nrburgring eventually replaced Hockenheimring for the following year, so Brands Hatch earned the race once again in 1985. That was to be the last European Grand Prix for a while, as a race in Hungary replaced it on the calendar

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER is Formula One's acknowledged rain-meister, but the German had to repel a strong challenge from Mika Hakkinen on the way to victory in a soaking European Grand Prix at the Nrburgring. The win was all the sweeter for Schumacher as it was his first in a Ferrari at the track, which is just a short drive from his childhood home in Kerpen. Master class: Michael Schumacher demonstrates his supreme skills in the wet Hakkinen finished just 13 seconds behind his great rival, and such was their dominance that the pair lapped the rest of the field. Hakkinen's team mate David Coulthard, who had started from pole position, wrestled an evil-handling McLaren to third place ahead of Schumacher's team mate Rubens Barrichello. Giancarlo Fisichella was fifth for Benetton after a feisty drive, and the Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa scored the first point of the season for the Arrows team in sixth. Schumacher now leads the world championship by a comfortable 18 points from Hakkinen, with Coulthard four points further in arrears. It is looking increasingly likely that the German will be able to fulfil his long-held ambition to bring the title back to Maranello.
