Was it really team management, or could it have been the machinations of the NFL that put Brett Favre up to dealing himself in for the 2007 season two days before Super Bowl XLI?

Favre's agent, Bus Cook, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the Packers wanted an answer from their franchise quarterback by kickoff of the Colts' win over the Bears on Feb. 4. Yet, it was curious during the two-minute warning of the fourth quarter that Favre popped up at the end of a league-sponsored commercial.
The 30-second spot was a farewell to the season featuring fans of various teams. A line of "It's hard to say goodbye" flashed on the screen, which segued to a pensive Favre's flipping a football to himself. The commercial concluded with the words, "For some, it's even harder."

No word on what Favre made from the cameo appearance, but the league undoubtedly will continue to prosper having the longtime superstar around for another year.

"He's obviously just been an incredible performer for the NFL ... and it's great news for the league," Roger Goodell said at the annual pre-Super Bowl commissioner's news conference on Feb. 2 in Miami, moments after the news had spread that morning of Favre's return.

Favre went through longtime family friend Al Jones, a sportswriter with The Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss., to broadcast his intentions.

"I am so excited about coming back," Favre said. "We have a good nucleus of young players. We were 8-8 last year, and that's encouraging. My offensive line looks good; the defense played good down the stretch. I'm excited about playing for a talented young football team."

Gbaja-Biamila, who in 2004 became the first player in Packer history to post four consecutive seasons of double-digit sacks as he tied his career-best with 13.5, knows that the defensive coaching staff will most likely have some changes in mind to improve his game even more.

"There's going to be some changes that they will want from me, but the changes will be to help me - help me be a better player than I am now," the lineman said. "It's going to be working towards my strength - getting off the ball and playing with speed, reacting with speed. I'm really excited about that."

While he's excited to get into the new defense, KGB will have to cut back on his horse hobby as the team's offseason program gets underway.

"I was riding almost every day earlier in the offseason," he said. "Now I'm going to be riding on my own and only have the trainer about once a week."

Soon enough, he'll have to trade in his saddle for shoulder pads and settle for riding offensive tackles into the backfield as he hunts down quarterbacks.
