| Legendary Oakland Raider owner Al Davis once said The quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard. Indianas defensive line, under the direction of Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach Brian George, understands the need to live by that credo this year to help the Hoosier defenders adjust to the new system.
A pass rush just helps everyone on defense, senior defensive end Victor Adeyanju said. It is essential to a successful defense. If you put pressure on the quarterback, he has to make quick decisions. Hopefully, they will be bad decisions. Also, when you sack the quarterback, you get the defense off the field. Hopefully, we will put constant pressure on quarterbacks so those younger guys in the backfield can get some picks or make big plays. It also helps the other defensive players make big plays with sacks. It is just essential to the whole philosophy of playing football. As a defense, you want to put the quarterback down. We have a scheme to be able to do that on a regular basis. |

| I like the style, because sometimes we had to be a bit timid in the other style of defense, Adeyanju said. I wasnt sure if I could go inside to go after the quarterback. The way the defense is set up now, you can take chances as long as you know your responsibilities of when to take a chance. It is a really nice change up.
Junior defensive end Kenny Kendal agrees that the simplified defensive scheme up front not only unleashes the ends to attack, but also lessens the amount of blockers they typically have to deal with on a play-to-play basis. It is easier for the defense ends, because we are lined up on the outside a lot, Kendal said. We dont have to mess with the tight ends as much and can just get after the quarterback. Thus far, Coach George is optimistic about IUs progress during the spring on developing a relentless onslaught on opposing quarterbacks, but he also understands that the process is still in its initial stages. It is a little bit different philosophy from before, George said. It is more of an attacking front. A lot of people perceive that, rather than seeing and reacting, you are more aggressive. It allows the players to play at a faster tempo. It puts them in a better position, but there is still a lot of stuff to understand. There is still a learning curve there, but they like what they have seen so far. They like the way we play defense. They are still learning. Well continue to work and they will continue to get better. |
