| TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -Tony Dungy took his own advice.
When the President of the United States calls, the Colts' Head Coach once told Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, you pretty much have to answer. Now, Dungy has done just that. Dungy, who in February coached the Colts to their first Super Bowl title in 36 years and who this summer became a New York Times best-selling author, will serve in the Bush Administration, the White House announced Tuesday. President George W. Bush on Tuesday announced his intention to appoint Dungy to be a Member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The appointment has a term of two years with a time commitment of two in-person meetings per year and quarterly phone conversations with assigned committees. "I had heard it was in the mix for a while, and it's just an honor," Dungy said Tuesday afternoon following a Colts 2007 Training Camp practice at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. "It's something we always talk about here with our team, about serving your community and being part of the community and trying to make things better. "To be appointed by the President is obviously a once-in-a-lifetime type thrill." |

| The coach was new, and the defense was, too.
The offense stayed very much the same. The result was an effective combination and a third playoff berth for the Colts in four seasons. The Colts, in new Head Coach Tony Dungys first season, improved from 29th in the NFL in total defense to eighth. Largely because of that improvement and because of a four-game mid-season winning streak the Colts returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence. The season was one of streaks. After a three-game winning streak early in the season, the Colts were alone in first place, and after a three-game losing streak, they were tied with Tennessee at 4-4 but still in first place. What followed was a crucial four-game winning streak that helped secure a playoff berth. First, the Colts upset the eventual NFC East Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, 35-13 in Philadelphia. After a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the Colts upset the Broncos in Denver, 23-20, in overtime. In the Broncos game, Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt kicked a 54-yard field goal to tie the game at the end of regulation, then kicked a 51-yarder with 9:22 remaining in overtime to secure the victory. After a 19-3 victory over the Houston Texans the following week, the Colts were 8-4 and controlled their destiny in the playoff chase. Their hopes of winning the first AFC South title faded the following week. That was when the Colts lost to eventual division champion Tennessee, 27-17, in Nashville. A 28-23 come-from-behind victory at Cleveland the following week all-but ensured a playoff berth, but after losing to the New York Giants at home, 44-27, they still hadnt clinched a playoff spot entering the final weekend of the season. They clinched the playoff spot the day before their final game of the season, then came from behind to beat the Jaguars in the season finale. The Colts then lost to the Jets, 41-0, in the first round of the playoffs. Among the cities who very much wanted a team was Indianapolis. Under the administrations of mayors Richard Lugar and William Hudnut, the city was making an ambitious effort to reinvent itself into a `Great American City.' The Hoosier Dome (later renamed the RCA Dome) had been built and was ready for an NFL expansion team. The deal to bring the Colts to Indianapolis came together in late March 1984 and Irsay and Hudnut arranged for the franchise to move from Baltimore immediately, and secretly, overnight, before the official announcement on March 29. |
