| Les Miles put LSU through the first of what will be 15 spring practices on Monday as the Tigers started their preparations for the 2007 season with a three hour workout at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.
Mondays workout had the Tigers going in short and helmets. LSU will practice again in shorts and helmets on Tuesday before putting on full pads on Thursday. In all, LSU will practice four times this week. It was a really nice first go, Miles said. The team is in really good shape. There was a lot of enthusiasm and some new faces looking for playing time. Theres a lot of competition. It was not perfect, but it is not supposed to be because its the first day. There was some talent out there, but we are working our way through the learning phase. It was a good practice. Mondays session also had the Tigers welcoming three new coaches to the practice field for the first time. Offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, along with offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and wide receivers coach D.J. McCarthy all enjoyed their first practice with the staff. It felt like the new guys were acting like old hands, Miles said. They were very comfortable and seemed to handle the players well. They know what to expect from them so it went well. One of the most interesting stories of spring football for LSU will be the competition between senior Matt Flynn and sophomore Ryan Perrilloux for the quarterback position. Miles said he liked what he saw out of the quarterbacks on Monday. I thought both Matt and Ryan did a nice job, Miles said. Both players worked had and had good practices. The issue is to be the best quarterback and to give this team an opportunity for victory. Whether that is Ryan Perrilloux or Matt Flynn only time will tell. It is good competition. |

| The Tigers will practice in shorts and helmets on Friday and Saturday before putting on the pads for the first time on Monday. The Tigers will have five practices before taking a week off for spring break from March 19-27.
The Tigers will resume practice following spring break on March 29. LSU's final spring practice, which will be a controlled-scrimmage with game-like situations, will come on April 16 at 11:30 a.m. in Tiger Stadium. In the two months since taking over as LSU's head coach, Miles said he has reviewed all game film from last year and met with every player on the team. Friday's practice will also be the first for seven new LSU assistant coaches. Among those first-year coaches for LSU include defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and special teams coordinator and linebacker coach Bradley Dale Peveto. Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and offensive line coach Stacy Searels are the two holdovers from the previous staff. In regards to spring practice, Miles said, "it's about what we have, making sure we can count on it, seeing how the personnel fits the new scheme and seeing what we can do. "There are some things we want to do on offense, defense and special teams with some obvious differences on defense and special teams." Miles inherits an LSU squad that is coming off a 9-3 overall mark and played in the Capital One Bowl in January. The Tigers return 20 starters, including 10 on offense and seven on defense, from the 2004 squad. |
