| Wild trim roster to 25; Sheppard still on the list:
ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Wild trimmed their training camp roster to 25 on Saturday, and James Sheppard was still on the list. Sheppard, the Wild's top pick in the 2006 draft, played in three exhibitions and earned his first assist in Friday's loss at St. Louis. His main competition were forwards Petr Kalus and Benoit Pouliot. They were assigned to AHL Houston, along with defensemen John Scott and Shawn Belle. The Wild need to cut down to their final roster by Tuesday. Two or three cuts are still likely. Sheppard has until Monday to sign an NHL contract or he'll be sent back to his junior team in Nova Scotia. Because he's only 19, he can't go to the minors. Matt Foy, a former late-round draft pick in his fifth camp, also was still with the team. And Erik Reitz, a defenseman who played last season in Houston, outlasted Belle and Scott. NHL teams can keep as many players as they want on the roster, but they can't excede this season's $50.5 million salary cap. |
