| New Orleans Hornets News: |
| NEW ORLEANS -The New Orleans Hornets and the Sacramento Kings could both be short-handed when they tip off the NBA regular season at 7 p.m. today in the New Orleans Arena.
The Kings will be without starting point guard Mike Bibby, starting forward Ron Artest, and No. 1 draft choice, center Spencer Hawes. Bibby will miss at least the first six weeks of the season because of a torn ligament in his left thumb and Hawes will miss at least the first week after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery during the preseason. Artest will miss the first seven games of the season under an NBA-imposed suspension as a result of his plea of no contest to a charge relating to domestic violence. The Hornets, meanwhile, could be without leading scorer and starting power forward David West, who sprained his left ankle in practice last week. But, ready or not, here comes the regular season, the Hornets' first full-time season in New Orleans since 2004-05. Coach Byron Scott said it will be helpful for the team to be based in one place all season after spending most of the last two seasons in Oklahoma City and playing a handful of games in the Crescent City. "You don't have to worry about trying to make adjustments for this or that or playing six games here or there," he said. "You know where you're going to play them. You're playing 41 regular-season games here at home. That's the bottom line." |

| Antoine Walker didn't have teammates like Ricky Davis and Paul Pierce with the Atlanta Hawks.
Davis scored 27 points off the bench and Pierce added 23 as the Boston Celtics overcame a poor first quarter to rout the lowly New Orleans Hornets, 113-100, for their seventh straight victory. Walker collected 18 points and nine rebounds for the hot-shooting Celtics, who are 11-1 since re-acquiring the forward from the Hawks on February 24. Walker went just 10-43 with Atlanta. "It's a long season. I don't look at it like that," Walker said of the Boston-Atlanta comparison. "(Atlanta) played 10 or 15 games without me, and I'm sure we would've won more. "But I'm in a great situation now. I wish (Atlanta) a lot of luck. Right now I'm just trying to keep this train rolling." The Hornets shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field in the first quarter to grab a 33-26 lead but allowed the Celtics to score 37 points in the second period, which ended with Boston ahead, 63-57. Davis, a former Hornet, scored 15 points in the second quarter and finished with a season-high five 3-pointers. Boston's lead was 75-67 midway through the third quarter before it went on a 13-0 run to all but put away the game. Pierce capped it with a 3-pointer for an 88-67 cushion with 2:49 left. New Orleans never got closer than 13 points in the final period. "Once we get them on their backs, we've got to put them away," Pierce said. "That's what we did tonight." Boston, which won its fifth straight road contest and opened a 5 1/2-game lead atop the Atlantic Division, shot 52 percent (38-of-73), including 10-of-19 from the arc, and sank 27-of-31 free throws. "We didn't start out great, but we finished great," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "We kept the lead, which is nice, and we shared the ball again. The two keys in the third quarter were Tony Allen's defense and Gary Payton's post-ups and making them adjust to that." Since Walker returned to Boston on February 24 in exchange for three players and a first-round pick, the Celtics are averaging 108 points per game, about seven more than they did before the trade. "Antoine's pretty good," Rivers said. "He's as good off the floor as he is on it. He gives us another veteran, which is nice, and a a go-to guy offensively, which is nice." Payton, one of the players for whom Walker was traded, rejoined the Celtics on March 4 after the Hawks waived him. Since then, Payton has shot 55 percent from the floor and has 51 assists and 11 turnovers in nine games. "We're amazing each other," said Payton, who had 15 points, six assists and no turnovers against the Hornets. "But the great thing now is that we're playing consistently. We're not up and down like we were early in the season." Rookie J.R. Smith scored 21 points and reserve Bostjan Nachbar added 19 for the Hornets, who lost at Boston on January 3, 108-90. "We were just soft," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Defensively we didn't try to take anything away from them. We allowed them to catch the ball where they wanted to catch it. Guys were going around us like we were standing still." |
