Palio Horse Race News:
The first Palio in the Campo was in 1583, but only at the beginning of the 1800s did the race assume the characteristics that it still preserves today. Since then the celebration has always taken place in Piazza del Campo twice a year, on 2 July and on 16 August. The city of Siena is divided into 17 contrade, or neighborhoods, but only ten can run in every Palio. For this reason, in addition to the seven that didnt participate in the preceding race, an additional three are chosen by lots and the celebration begins with this drawing.

The day of the Palio, after the final rehearsal, the tension is high, and when the bell of the tower gives the signal, the young men of the company put on their splendid costumes. In an atmosphere of excitement, every contrada that will run in the race blesses its horse. The wait becomes increasingly tense during the historic parade that precedes the Palio, during which every contrada displays its flag-throwers. Afterwards a cart pulled by four oxen enters, carrying the drape that will be assigned to the winner.
