Phoenix Suns News:
You can come up with a list of keys to a Suns championship longer than the Suns' season-ticket waiting list.

No improvement should rank higher than center Amaré Stoudemire's defense.

It is not just that Stoudemire's ability to defend well is at the heart of upgrading Phoenix's most-castigated department. The Suns can't win a title without him on the floor extensively, making his ability to avoid last season's foul problems paramount. Only Golden State's Andris Biedrins, a first-time starter, had more fouls (304) than Stoudemire (295) last season.

"I definitely think it's on my shoulders," Stoudemire said. "If I get better, the team gets better."

Stoudemire no longer has trusted locker-room neighbor Kurt Thomas for advice or on-court relief and support. There is no dodging the "center" label any longer. After being first team All-NBA by virtue of being a center, he almost always will be the center in the Suns' lineup this season. That will mean defending the top big men.

"If he does that, I know a lot of teams can't guard him," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "If he's trying to play defense and he guards somebody else, I know they're not guarding him, so that's already a plus.

"It (reducing fouls) is just anticipation and stamina and not making silly fouls. You can't stay out of harm's way. He's going to be guarding the basket, so he's going to have to know when to go for a block and when not to."

That is a delicate balance. He is now asked to be the lane's enforcer but might be hesitant to stop layups or dunks with fouls because he is mindful of avoiding foul trouble. The Suns coaches gave Stoudemire a to-do list to improve his defense, which was his summer focus during USA Basketball play. The first priority already is achieved. He wants to be a good defender. If that turns out like his previous desires to shoot or rebound better, he will improve.

More Phoenix Suns News:
Baron Davis scored 33 points, including five during a decisive 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, sparking the Golden State Warriors to a 110-100 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Davis, who has helped the Warriors to an 8-6 record since he was obtained from New Orleans last month, hit seven 3-pointers. That was more than the entire Phoenix team, which specializes in that shot.

Derek Fisher added 19 points for the Warriors, who got 41 points from their reserves to only 12 for the Suns.

The game was close throughout, with 24 lead changes and 15 ties, before Mike Dunleavy's 3-pointer early in the fourth period gave the Warriors the lead for good, 91-90. They then scored the next nine points.

Jason Richardson had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Dunleavy scored 11 for the Warriors, who defeated an elite Western Conference team for the second straight night. They beat Sacramento 100-97 Thursday night at Oakland.

Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 31 points and 10 rebounds, but failed to score in the final period, missing three shots. Shawn Marion had 28 points and 17 rebounds for the Suns, while Joe Johnson scored 15 points and Steve Nash had 12 points and 13 assists.

The first half, which ended with Golden State leading 54-53, was a battle between the Warriors' guards and the Suns' two big scorers, Stoudemire and Marion.

Golden State's backcourt trio of Davis (17), Fisher (13) and Richardson (8) accounted for 38 points, while Marion (17) and Stoudemire (16) produced 33. Stoudemire's total included 10 consecutive points during a 2:24 span early in the second period.

However, the Warriors were beating the Suns at their own game, hitting seven 3-pointers in 16 attempts- four by Davis and three by Fisher - to only two of 11 for Phoenix. The Suns entered the game having connected on 586 3-pointers, the most in franchise history and tops in the league this season.

Stoudemire carried the Suns' offense in the third quarter, scoring 15 points on an assortment of dazzling inside shots, helping Phoenix take an 83-82 lead by the end of the period. Davis again carried the Golden State attack, scoring 11 points, including two more 3-pointers.
