| San Diego State's month-long spring football drills came to an end on Saturday morning with the Black team knocking off the Red squad, 28-14, in front of approximately 2,000 fans at the Aztec practice facility.
The underclassmen had strong spring games with freshman quarterbacks Darren Mougey and Kevin Craft combining for three touchdowns, freshman receiver DeMarco Sampson scoring two touchdowns and freshman linebacker Andrew Schantz tying for game-high tackle honors with five, including a quarterback sack. The Black team took the lead early when Mougey found Chazeray Schilens for a 23-yard touchdown drive for the first points of the game. That lead was extended to 14-0 when another freshman quarterback, Kevin Craft, was 3-for-3 for 67 yards on a brisk 80-yard march that was capped with a 36-yard scoring strike to freshman Sampson. Michael Franklin was the day's most productive player. He had a game-high 77 rushing yards on seven carries and he led both teams with seven receptions. The Red squad got on the board and back into the game on an 80-yard, eight-play march midway through the second period. The scoring play was a 29-yard pass from Matt Dlugolecki to Brett Swain. |
