| LAMEDA -In a perfectly bewildering analysis of his football team, backup quarterback Trent Dilfer told a Fox radio audience the 49ers have good players who are playing poorly.
As opposed, one guesses, to poor players performing quite well. There has been a great deal of explanatory rhetoric about the Niners, especially from head coach Mike Nolan whose stories are more and more becoming variations on themes by Hans Christian Anderson. Once upon a time, there was this great team with great athletes and great game plans cursed by a troll under the Bay Bridge and so has -cover your ears, children -lost five games in a row. Over here in what the late Herb Caen referred to as "the mysterious East Bay," the Raiders have produced the same 2-5 record as the Niners, but emperor Al Davis offers no fictional narrative. Instead, greeted by a journalist who matter-of-factly wondered how Al was doing, Davis responded, "I'm fine. I just want to win." That, we know, is unvarnished candor. No musing'bout quarterback injuries or close defeats. We're well aware, to Alfrom Sports 1 nothing matters expect the bottom line. As the years go on, that seems. |

| Upon his purchase of the club in 1977, DeBartolo began a process of upgrading the organization's front office administration and on-field talent. His vision was to create a winning franchise that operated with class and dignity. Of equal importance, however, was creating an atmosphere conducive to developing a strong sense of kinship within the operation.
As Chief Executive Officer of the 49ers from its acquisition until 1997, Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr. saw his primary role as one of provid-ing emotional and financial support for the players and coaches. Under his leadership the 49ers earned the moniker "Team of the 80s" after claiming four Super Bowl titles during that decade. They extended their dominance into the 90s, becoming only NFL team to produce 10-or-more wins for 16 consecutive seasons (1983-98). Since 1981, the 49ers have won 13 division titles, five conference championships and five Super Bowl championships (the first franchise in NFL history to win five), claiming the world title in 1981 (Super Bowl XVI), '84 (Super Bowl XIX), '88 (Super Bowl XXIII), '89 (Super Bowl XXIV) and '94 (Super Bowl XXIX). San Francisco has posted at least 10 wins seventeen times in each of the last 20 seasons. The 1985 season saw the arrival of Jerry Rice, who would go on to become the most prolific pass receiver in NFL history. Rice was named NFC rookie of the year, while workhorse running back Roger Craig became the first NFL player to amass 1000 rushing and 1000 receiving yards in the same season. First-round playoff defeats in the 1985, 1986, and 1987 seasons were followed by a last-minute victory over Cincinnati in Super Bowl XXIII in 1989. Walsh, who had led the 49ers to three Super Bowl victories, retired at the seasons end. George Seifert, the 49ers defensive coordinator since 1983, became head coach in 1989 and the second rookie head coach in NFL history to lead a team to the Super Bowl. (Don McCafferty of the Baltimore Colts was the first, in 1970.) Under Seiferts leadership, Montana had his best season ever, winning an NFL most valuable player (MVP) award, his second of two league passing championships, and his league-record third Super Bowl MVP award. The 49ers set or matched 40 records in their defeat of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV. |
