| Unlike seasons past, there are reasons for Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren to fiddle with the personnel groupings. We're not just talking about receiver packages, as has become the rule rather than exception with receivers coach Nolan Cromwell rotating in different numbers and players at different times.
We're talking about a different look at tailback with Mo Morris than Shaun Alexander from time to time. We're talking about Floyd Womack utilizing his versatility to get looks at both guard and tackle. In other words, as the Seahawks (4-3) begin their stretch run after the bye week this Sunday at Cleveland against the Browns (4-3), there are any number of different football and motivational factors that are going on with the offense. "We looked at it hard in the bye week, actually," Holmgren said. "I was in communication with some people, and now when (since) we came back. You might see or notice different combinations at practice and we will see what happens with that. I am not going to say exactly how that is going to come down here. One of the reasons is I am not sure but I am going to shake it up a little bit." What he wants to shake up is the 26th-ranked running game against a Browns defense that is ranked 29th against the run. Alexander hasn't had a touchdown in five games and has just 107 yards on 44 carries the past three games. |

| The Seattle Seahawks announced Wednesday that Tim Ruskell will assume the position Seahawks president of football operations. In this position, he will be the primary decision maker regarding all player and personnel decisions, including oversight of the clubs pro and college scouting departments.
"From the beginning of this process we have sought, as our primary objective, someone with an eye for talent," said Paul G. Allen, owner of the Seahawks NFL franchise. "We wanted a professional who had a strong football record and who had a knack for getting talented players into the roster. Tim Ruskell is very well regarded and has clearly had success in recognizing and securing some of the top players in the league. Tim has also demonstrated an ability to communicate and motivate, and as president of football operations we believe Tim will solidify the football culture of the Seahawks. I look forward to working with him, Mike Holmgren, Tod Leiweke and the rest of the Seahawks staff and players as we continue to build a premier NFL organization in Seattle." A scouting veteran of more than 20 years, Ruskell most recently served 2004 as the Atlanta Falcons assistant general manager under mentor and highly regarded Falcons President and General Manager Rich McKay. Before joining the Falcons, he served 17 distinguished seasons in Tampa Bay where he began as a regional scout in 1987 before assuming the positions of director of college scouting (1992-2000) and later director of player personnel (2001-2003). In his only season with Atlanta, Ruskell assisted McKay in piecing together a roster that won the NFC South and earned a berth in the NFC Championship Game. This after the Falcons finished last in the conference with a 5-11 record the season before his arrival. "If there are 50 great evaluators of talent in the NFL, I believe Tim is in the top five," said McKay, who also worked with Ruskell in Tampa Bay. "We had great success in the draft while we were in Tampa, due in large part to Tim and the players he would put up on the draft board and believe in." Ruskell helped build a team in Tampa Bay that earned postseason berths five of his final seven seasons, including two NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl XXXVII Championship. As director of player personnel in Tampa Bay, Ruskell was instrumental in providing the Buccaneers with a roster that sent seven players to the Pro Bowl in 2002. During his tenure in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers had at least one player named to the Pro Bowl in each of the last eight seasons from 1996 through 2003. In 2000, the Buccaneers sent a league-high nine players to the Pro Bowl, including a league-best six starters. Ruskell originally joined the Buccaneers as a regional scout in 1987, a job he performed for four years before being promoted to director of college scouting in 1992. Prior to joining the Buccaneers, Ruskell served as the director of scouting for the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits from 1985-1986. He also worked as a scout for the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1983 through 1985. Knoxs Seahawks collected a club-record 12 victories in 1984 but lost in the second round of the playoffs. In 1986 Largent set an NFL record by catching a pass in his 128th consecutive game, and a year later he broke the record for most career receptions, surpassing Charlie Joiner, who had totaled 750. The Seahawks won their first division crown in 1988. The team struggled defensively, however, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Largent retired in 1989 as the most prolific wide receiver in professional football history. He became only the second receiver, after Don Hutson, to own career records in yards (13,089), receptions (819), and touchdowns (100) all at the same time. (Jerry Rice now holds all three records.) |
