Takuma Sato was not far off his BAR team-mate's pace, with the gap between himself and Button sitting at 0.183 seconds. The same, though, cannot be said for Rubens Barrichello. Although he finished the race in the runner-up slot his best lap was 0.437 seconds off Michael's pace. Williams duo Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher were seventh and eighth on the fastest lap time scoreboard. But while Montoya got within a second of Michael's best time, his younger brother Ralf did not. Ralf trailed Montoya by 0.286s and Michael by 1.098 seconds. Mark Webber and Felipe Massa were the two fastest drivers not competing for one of the four top teams in the 2004 Constructors' Championship. They completed the top ten. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen found himself just outside in 11th place, 1.392 seconds off the pace. The Finn, though, fared better than his team-mate David Coulthard. The Scot's 16th place meant he only beat a Toyota, a Jordan and the two Minardis. He was 0.333 seconds off Kimi's pace. |

| That he was able to finish the race, and with barely a blip in his lap times, was, according to Schumi, testimony to the ability of his Ferrari crew.
"These guys, they are just so wonderful. Its a magnificent job the team has been doing in terms of reliability, and even having such a problem, the car still makes it home to the finish and thats exceptional, really exceptional." 'Exceptional' is also an accurate description of the Ferrari package at present. Their bullet-proof car is as fast as it is reliable, and with Rubens Barrichello acknowledging that "Bridgestone are doing a phenomenal job", the question has already moved on from who will win this year's World Championship to when Schumi will win and how many grands prix he takes in the process. |
