Subway 500 News:
Ryan Newman shattered the track recorded at Martinsville Speedway Friday afternoon, capturing the pole for Sundays SUBWAY 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race.

But it wasnt just Newman who battered the old track record, set by Tony Stewart in 2000. A total of 17 drivers broke the old record on the recently repaved track.

Newman lapped the .526-mile oval in 19.513 seconds (97.043 mph), bettering Stewarts mark of 19.855 seconds (95.371 mph).

Obviously the car had to be right, but the track, just being so much smoother, allows the cars to grip off the corners as well as the concrete being farther down the straightway, said Newman after winning his 25th career NEXTEL Cup pole.

It used to be the hardest part of this track was the transition both getting in from the asphalt to the concrete and then as well the concrete to the asphalt on the exit getting the power down. The fresh concrete is definitely grippy on top of the fact that theres more of it.

Rusty Wallace, who won the Advance Auto Parts 500 at Martinsville last April, qualified second. Both Newman and Wallace drive Dodges.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified third, while Ward Burton was fourth. The surprise of the day was Travis Kvapil, who qualified fifth in his first attempt at making a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup event.

Newman, mired in ninth in the Chase For The NEXTEL Cup, put himself in position to gain some ground in The Chase.

The bottom line is, I dont want to use go for broke, but basically weve got to do the best job we can each and every lap, said Newman after winning his seventh pole of the season. We wouldnt race any differently if we were first. We are ninth and our goal is to lead the most laps and especially the last one.

Points leader Kurt Busch qualified seventh, four spots behind second-place Earnhardt.

Jeff Gordon qualified 15th, ending a streak of three consecutive poles and eight consecutive top 10 starts at Martinsville. Its just his seventh start outside the top 10 in 24 races at Martinsville.

Hertas Andretti Green Racing teammate Dan Wheldon qualified second in the No. 26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone entry. It was the fourth time AGR teammates have shared the front row.
