| Officials at Richard Childress Racing said that Clint Bowyer will get his first career Cup start in the Subway Fresh 500 Nextel Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway Phoenix in four weeks.
Right now, the plan is to make the ride a one-shot deal. But, as a Childress source said, who knows? Bowyer currently drives the No. 2 Chevrolet for Childress in the Busch series and is third in points. He trails points leader Edwards by 119 points. Bowyer was leading in the final laps of Saturday's Busch race at Atlanta when his tires gave out. He fell back to 21st, but that was still good enough to keep him near the top of the standings. Lowe's Motor Speedway has scheduled 35 hours of open testing for NASCAR Craftsman Truck, Busch and NEXTEL Cup Series teams in preparation for the track's slate of May races, including the May 21 NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge and the May 29 Coca-Cola 600. The testing schedule: April 26, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. May 3-4, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. May 9-10, NASCAR Busch Series, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Many of the bumps in the track's racing surface were removed recently during an asphalt grinding process and the testing sessions mark the first, and only, opportunity for teams to experiment with the new surface prior to the May events. Craftsman Truck Series teams will be making preparations for the Quaker Steak & Lube 200 on Friday night, May 20, while NASCAR Busch Series drivers and crews will be fine tuning set-ups for the first nighttime running of the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 on Saturday, May 28. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series teams will be busy preparing for the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge on Saturday night, May 21, and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday evening, May 29. Lowe's Motor Speedway's frontstretch grandstand will be open free of charge during each testing session. Fans should enter through Gate 5A next to the ticket office on the second floor of Smith Tower. |
