ST. PETERSBURG -- The American League East shifted a bit late Monday afternoon, when the Rays acquired left-hander Kurt Birkins from the Orioles via waivers.

Birkins, who actually faced the Rays at Tropicana Field during his first Majors start, will come back to roost in Tampa Bay after he compiled a 1-2 record and 8.13 ERA over 19 games (two starts) with the Orioles.

The 27-year-old split time between Baltimore and Triple-A Norfolk (8-4, 3.07 ERA over 19 starts) in 2007. Birkins was a 33rd-round Orioles selection in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, and made his Majors debut with the club in 2006.

That year, he posted a 5-2 record and 4.94 ERA over 35 games, and maintained an impressive .221 batting average against. Birkins made his starting debut on the bump at Tropicana Field on Sept. 3, and worked to a no-decision over four innings. He's fanned 57 hitters over 65 1/3 career big league innings.

To make room on the roster for Birkins, backup catcher Raul Casanova was designated for assignment.

Casanova bounced between Triple-A and the Majors in 2007. The 35-year-old hit .253 (20-for-79) over 29 games with Tampa Bay, including six home runs and 11 RBIs.

"[Guthrie] worked hard here in camp, and I thought he threw the ball respectably. But this gives him an opportunity to catch on with someone, instead of keeping him here until the last week, when everybody's got their plans set. ... I hope he catches on."

A place for Fossum: Fossum is a candidate for the starting rotation and the bullpen. Either way, Piniella likes what he's seen from the left-hander acquired from Arizona in the deal that sent Jose Cruz Jr. to the Diamondbacks.

"We like him," Piniella said. "He's got a good arm. He changes speeds with his breaking pitches, [and he's] been working on a changeup. Yeah, he's looked fine. He's a versatile pitcher -- we could use him in the rotation or in the bullpen. I don't think there's any question about [him being on the roster], just where we use him."

In 2005, the Devil Rays hope to continue to build on their most recent accomplishments and add even more young players from their farm system to the mix.
The young core of players helped the Rays to a team-record 12-game win streak and 30 wins in 40 games last summer to finish with a team-record 70 victories. The Rays also ended up in fourth place in the American League East, the first time they did not finish in last in their seven years of existence.

The team will have an increased payroll ($32-33 million) and increased expectations as well. The Rays hope to win more games than ever, become even more competitive and continue to mix in their top prospects, while their other key players continue to develop and improve.

Center fielder Rocco Baldelli will miss some time early in the season because of ACL surgery in November. Baldelli could be out from one to three months of the season. All-Star Carl Crawford will shift to center field but continue to lead off. Crawford is aiming to lead the league in steals for the third straight season, while improving his power and cutting down on his strikeouts.
