| Kevin Mawae remembers the day he first felt like the old man in the locker room.
Some teammates were planning a night on the town, and talked about meeting up at 11:30 p.m. to go out. The veteran center simply shook his head, smiled and thought, "Maybe when I was younger." That was two years ago when he played in New York. Now he's 36, the oldest Titan. Before the NFL instituted the salary cap, veterans easily outnumbered youngsters in locker rooms. Now, with teams not as likely to keep as many high-priced veterans, the 30-somethings are a rare breed. Most of the players are in their early to mid-20s, making for an interesting mix of personalities and tastes. Mawae still can hang with his teammates on the field, but he knows his limits off it. "They want you to go out with them on Thursday night and I am sitting there thinking, 'My son has football practice, my daughter has a dance class, and Frasier comes on at 9:30,'" Mawae said. "Yeah, I've been around for a while. I get the old man jokes. But you know what? This game helps keeps you young.'' The average age of the Titans on opening day this season was 26.36 years, and the average age of their starters on opening day was 25.81. Only nine players on the current 53-man roster are 30 or older. Perhaps no team has a wider generation gap than the Panthers, who visit the Titans on Sunday. They have Vinny Testaverde, 43, at quarterback. "Vinny is nine years older than I am,'' said Titans backup quarterback Kerry Collins, suddenly feeling like a kid again at 34. "Even I could say to him, 'Hey, I remember watching you play Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.' "I'm sure it is hard for some guys on that team to fathom how long he's been around. He might be twice as old as some of them. But really, it's not like we're old men. We're just old in the locker room, for what we do.'' Try telling that to the young players. |

| In the beginning it was hard because it seemed like there was no end to it, Calico said. But ever since I took the brace off, Ive been running and Im walking better. Im waking up with no pain without taking any pain pills. I can see the light now. At first, I couldnt see the light.
With the departure of Derrick Mason to the Baltimore Ravens, the spotlight will be on Calico to step up and fill the void left by the player who posted four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons for the Titans. Its a challenge hes looking forward to. Im very excited about it, Calico said. I wish I had two more years with Derrick to learn from him, but Im very excited about the role that Ive stepped into since he left. Hopefully this year I can get on his pace and start where he left off. Although Calico was sad to see Mason leave, he feels that what he learned from the two-time Pro Bowler will help his game in the future. I learned how to study my playbook. I learned what to do in the little intermediate routes that you run, the slants and the posts, he said. I learned basic techniques from him. Lemm left the Oilers after the championship but returned five years later to guide the club to the postseason in 1967 and 1969. A new Houston powerhouse emerged behind quarterback Pete Beathard, running back Hoyle Granger, and offensive guard Bob Talamini. Safeties Ken Houston and Jim Norton anchored one of the leagues toughest defenses. Houston joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the NFL-AFL merger. After four losing seasons under four different coaches, the Oilers posted their first NFL winning record in 1975. Former defensive coordinator Bum Phillips led the team as head coach, and Houston posted a 10-4 win-loss record. |
