| Texas Rangers News: |
| ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers put former closer Akinori Otsuka and two other players back on their 40-man roster Monday.
Otsuka, who had 32 saves in 2006 before the Rangers signed Eric Gagne last offseason, missed half of 2007 with a forearm injury. He ended this season on the 60-day disabled list after going 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA and four saves in 34 appearances. The Rangers also reinstated right-hander Josh Rupe (elbow) and shortstop Joaquin Arias (shoulder) from the 60-day DL and put them back on the 40-man roster. Neither played last season. The Rangers also reinstated right-hander Willie Eyre from the 60-day disabled list, but took him off the 40-man roster. Eyre (4-6, 5.16 ERA), who might not be able to pitch again until 2009, signed a minor league contract and will continue rehabilitation from elbow ligament replacement surgery in August. The Rangers also removed right-hander Mike Wood, catcher Chris Stewart and outfielder Kevin Mahar from the 40-man roster. |

| More Texas Rangers News: |
| Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dropped in on Rangers camp while he was in the Phoenix area checking out the new retractable-roof stadium going up in Glendale to house the Arizona Cardinals.
"Since I always go to baseball to get a quarterback, I'm here looking for a quarterback, watching these pitchers," Jones joked. Recent Cowboys quarterbacks Drew Henson, Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter had all played professional baseball. The Cowboys are planning on building a new stadium near the Rangers' Ameriquest Field in Arlington. "We're going to be right in the same neighborhood," Rangers owner Tom Hicks said. Jones said the seasons would not coincide that much. "I'd like to overlap you going into November some year," Hicks said. That would mean the Rangers would be playing in the World Series for the first time in franchise history. With the stadiums so close, there could be a conflict if the Cowboys have a home date at the same time the Rangers are at Ameriquest for a playoff game. "We've worked that out," Jones said. "I want you to know the Cowboys will be very cooperative when the Rangers play in the World Series." Alfonso Soriano, who was sick, was scratched from the lineup against the Rockies on Tuesday. Esteban German moved from third base to second base in Soriano's absence, while Marshall McDougall was brought from minor league camp to play third. MacDougall had two hits and made several fielding gems. ... To make room on the 40-man roster for Colbrunn, the club designated infielder Jason Bourgeois for assignment. ... The Rangers also optioned outfielder Jason Botts to Triple-A Oklahoma, while right-handed pitchers Josh Rupe and Nick Masset were optioned to Double-A Frisco. Following is the first in a series of weekly stories on MLB.com examining each Major League club, position-by-position. Each Wednesday until Spring Training camps open, we'll preview a different position. Today: Catcher The buzzwords for the Rangers' catching situation in 2005 are depth, depth and depth. With that in mind, the Rangers formulated a plan to secure the backstop position in 2005 with Rod Barajas, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Gerald Laird. Robert Machado and Jeff Smith are among the reinforcements at the minor league levels. "We are in a better situation now considering where we were in the past," Rangers general manager John Hart said. "With the job Rod did last year and by bringing in a veteran like Sandy, [that] improves the depth. Obviously, we will monitor what Gerald does and how his health is. He did not get to play winter ball because of his thumb." Laird, who when healthy remains the top young catcher in the organization, has gone from being the big league starter to essentially third on the depth chart -- or the starter at Triple-A Oklahoma -- in less than a year. Last spring, he won the starting job over incumbent Einar Diaz and won Rookie of the Month for April after leading American League rookies with 18 hits in the month. He suffered a major setback on May 20, when he tore a ligament in his left thumb during a play at the plate, and he missed the next two months. That's when everything changed. Catchers: Depth, depth and depth Corner infielders: Wed., Jan. 12 Middle infielders: Wed., Jan. 19 Outfielders: Wed., Jan. 26 Starting rotation: Wed., Feb. 2 Bullpen: Wed., Feb. 9 Bench: Wed., Feb. 16 "We like Gerald and we hope he has a great Spring Training," Rangers manager Buck Showalter said "But as an organization, you have to protect yourself. Catcher is a tough position and you don't start a season with health questions there. It's something we refuse to do." In 49 games in 2004, Laird hit .224 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 147 at-bats. He scored 20 runs and hit six doubles, but it was not enough to keep the starting job. He has spent the winter rehabilitating his thumb in Arizona and could be on his way back to the minor leagues. "It was one of those things where it was my first time on the disabled list, and maybe I was a little immature and inexperienced about it," Laird said earlier this winter. "I was happy for Rod and glad to see him do well, but there is also an urgency to get back because you don't want to lose the job. I wanted to play and contribute to the success of the team, and I might have rushed a little. "It wasn't feeling right. I was hurting and I was not competing like I was before, and it showed on the field. There were balls I could not catch clean and I was compensating. Anybody who has seen me play knew that this was not the normal me back there." By contrast, Laird's loss was Barajas' gain. Barajas, who initially split time with Laird, eventually won the job and finished with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in 108 games. He performed so well, he enters the 2005 season as the starter, meanwhile providing some stability at the position. "We feel better coaching-wise," Showalter said. "I like the flexibility we have at catcher." |
