| TORONTO -If you are looking for a measure of how much circumstances have been altered for the Toronto Raptors, look no further than the pre-season predictions being tossed around like confetti.
After last season's 47-win surprise, Sports Illustrated has predicted Toronto will finish eighth in the Eastern Conference; ESPN The Magazine and CBS Sportsline have them sixth. In Vegas, the over-under on total wins is 42.5. And of the 30 NBA general managers surveyed by the league, not one picked the Raptors to repeat as Atlantic Division champions. The fact that being seen as a simple playoff team is considered a sign of disrespect is a good indication that, for the Toronto Raptors, times have changed. "Despite what happened last year, I don't think people are looking for us to do much," says Chris Bosh, upon whose health this season hinges. "It's been the story since I've been here." When the season begins tonight at home against Philadelphia, the debate is no longer over whether this is a good team. Unless Bosh falls apart, which is not impossible, this should be a good team. No, the question is whether this will be a consequential team. There are plenty of good teams who win some games, get to the playoffs and fizzle out. The question is whether the Toronto Raptors, with their pretty offence and assorted jump-shooters and lack of grit, will become a team that matters. "You have to be a team that matters," says Bosh. "It was really tough last year, because even though we were [the East's No. 3 seed] we were the underdog [in the playoffs against New Jersey] because we lacked experience. But I think we learned a lot from that series, and that's going to help us out ? we know what we want to accomplish. |

| Vince Carter ignited a firestorm a few days ago when, during an interview with John Thompson on TNT, he admitted that he hadnt been pushing himself in Toronto as hard as he should have. "In years past, no, said Carter, who was traded to New Jersey on December 17th. I was fortunate to have the talent ... you get spoiled when you're able to do a lot of things. You see that you don't have to work at it. Now, with the all the injuries, I have to work harder. I'm a little hungrier. Getting a fresh start has made me want to attack the basket." Erin Gunther didnt have much time to socialize.
The Silver Creek freshman soccer player was in a hurry and had to scoot out of the locker room following the Raptors 6-2 win over Skyline on Thursday. Her presence was due in south Denver for basketball practice. Sine Gunther, along with fellow freshmen teammates Kate Russell, Danielle Figliola and Janelle Kramer, recently made the Team Colorado select squad, shes subsequently found the need to balance soccer with hoops. And while its made for quite a full itinerary this spring, she doesnt mind the frenzied pace. Its fun, Gunther said. Doesnt full schedule leave her tired, though? After all, 80 minutes of soccer followed by a two-hour basketball practice isnt easy. Not at all, Gunther said. I like both sports. I couldnt choose just one. Good thing, too. Gunther made quit a contribution against Skyline. Gunther had a goal and an assist during the Raptors first-ever win over Skyline in girls soccer. We played all right, Gunther said as her ride awaited her outside the locker room doors. Just all right? The Raptors outshot Skyline, 17-8. The Falcons couldve charged Silver Creek rent for spending so much time on their side of the field. We can play better, said sophomore Marinne Burnham, who had two goals and an assist. And permission has been officially granted to the Raptors to play better. The Silver Creek girls soccer team can go ahead and become a good squad. Thats perfectly fine with coach Sarah Friend. Were not quite confident enough to believe were as good of team as we are, Friend said. Thats something we need to grow into. We need to give ourselves permission to be great. The Raptors may be closer than they think. They certainly earned the Falcons admiration. Theyre getting better every year, Skyline senior midfielder Mavi Gideon said. They play well as a team. The Raptors scored twice in the opening two minutes to put Skyline in a crater-sized hole early. While the Falcons would make it 3-2 at halftime courtesy of goals by Sam McFarling and Nikki Marshall the Raptors ended any chance of a comeback with three unanswered goals in the second half. We didnt play with any heart, passion or desire, especially in the second half, Skyline coach Kevin Puckett said. Silver Creek played with enough for both teams. The Raptors wanted this game. They wanted to finally win a crosstown rivalry game. This was a good win for us, Friend said. Were a very talented team. Now we just need to believe that. |
