| The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly referred to as simply "Wimbledon", is the oldest event in the sport of tennis. It is typically regarded as one of the most important international tennis events. For instance, according to tennis writer and broadcaster John Parsons' Ultimate Encyclopedia of Tennis (1998)[1], Wimbledon "is the oldest, the most famous and certainly the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world". Similarly, tennis journalist Paul Fein calls Wimbledon "tennis' most prestigious spectacle" in his book Tennis Confidential (2002) [2].
Held every June and July in London, United Kingdom, the tournament is the third Grand Slam event played each year, preceded by the Australian Open and the French Open, and followed by the U.S. Open. The tournament lasts for two weeks, subject to the extensions for rain, and is the only Grand Slam event currently played on a grass surface (although that surface is played on in other tournaments as well, such as Queens and Halle) . Separate tournaments are simultaneously held, all at the same venue, for Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Youth tournaments — Boys' Singles, Girls' Singles, Boys' Doubles and Girls' Doubles — are also held. Additionally, special invitational tournaments are held: the 35 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 45 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 35 and over Ladies' Doubles and wheelchair doubles. |

| Despite the weathers interference and the loss of two complete days' play in the opening week, the 118th Championships closed on a triumphant note with confirmation of Roger Federer's supremacy in the men's game and the confirmation on the women's scene of a bright, new 17-year-old star in Maria Sharapova. Federer, the world No.1 and defending champion, lived up to pre-tournament hype and expectation by fighting back to defeat Andy Roddick 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. It was the first Wimbledon final between the top two seeds for 22 years and fulfilled all hopes of drama and genius as the climax of the fortnight. With rain twice forcing short breaks in the play, Roddick, who had lost to Federer at the semi-final stage last year, surprised the Swiss by following his venomous serve and big forehand to the net. He took the opening set, came very close to winning the second and was 4-2 up in the third when rain intervened. During the break Federer re-evaluated his tactics, decided to serve and volley more, and dramatically swung the match in his favour.
